Here is something a lot of people are not aware of: finding good sportswear in plussize is a complete bitch. Up to a size 48, you can kind of find some stuff, and squeeze your butt into the biggest straightsize, but anything bigger than that and you’re basically fucked. The things you do find are baggy, illfitting, have a poor quality (hello completely see-through leggings when you squat) and just generally boring. Which is why I was thrilled to discover Grrrl clothing, because they are total gamechangers.
I had seen the brand on instagram and I’ve been following them for a while, so I knew they did bigger sizes, but I just figured they’d go up to a 48 or something, like most brands. Because they kept showing me awesome stuff, I went over to their site to find out exactly what sizes they sold, and was not only very surprised by their sizing, but by their whole take on things. Here’s what they have to say about their models and sizes:
” We think it’s time to call bullshit on the clothing industry. And their model photoshop. Their unrealistic body stereotypes. And making every woman feel like anything than an extra small is an abnormality. We don’t put clothes for our fuller bodied sisters at the back of the store. Or fat shame our employees. Like other brands. We are grrrls. Loud. Can you hear us?”
CAN I GET AN AMEN?
This is 100% what I believe in. Women supporting women, instead of trashing eachother. Showing a diversity in bodies. And it’s not just words and promises, they ACTUALLY do it. Their site shows models in various shapes, sizes, ethnicities, ages and abilities (yes, including a model in a wheelchair, because clearly being badass has no limits). I am applauding this until my hands bleed, and the entire fashion industry should take notes from them.
According to their sizeguide, I’m a Heidi on my hips and an Amenah on my waist, but as usual I went with the hip measurement. They go up a size bigger, and considering their stuff stretches I’d say it’s accessible for people from a EU size 34 to 54-56. PRETTY AWESOME RIGHT (Yes, I’m screaming. I’ll be doing that a lot in this review. Get used to it).
But okay, enough about their philosophy, let’s talk about their stuff. You may or may not know that I got into powerlifting less than a year ago. Which means I’m training to be badass and strong and lift heavy weights. I did my second competition after 6 months of training and set 2 records for my weight category, as well as amaze myself because my body is soooo awesome for doing this. My goal is to have lots of fun while training and build up more confidence in my lifts, and hopefully to compete (and kick ass) on a european level in a couple of years. We’ll see. Here’s an ultra glamourous video of me competing (head over to my instagram to see more, I occasioally share lifting stuff there. Should I share more?). And in case you were wondering: yes, I am obligated to wear that outfit :p.
Because I’m bending over a lot (doing squats and deadlifts), I need high quality leggings that don’t become see-through when you bend over. I mean, I don’t ”need” them per se, but it’s nice to be able to work out without flashing everyone your underwear. I also need leggings to be highwaisted (seriously, WHAT IS UP with low-waisted leggings? WHO WEARS THOSE?) and to not roll down when I move because ain’t nobody got time for that.
I decided to try this brand and purchase one of their leggings for review. You can find the legging here.
All of this and more I found in this grrrl legging. It has an amazing compression fit that sucks you in like shapewear but is sooo comfi at the same time, an very highwaited fit (look at the cute ”grrrl” design on top) and the quality is excellent. I did a squat test and it was no problemo, which I kind of expected since so many powerlifters seem to love their stuff. I’m also loving the black and white design. I really can not fault this in any way, it’s just that good*.
I mean… LOOK AT ALL THIS HIGHWAISTED GLORIOUSNESS.
They also have bootyshorts, accessories and tops with awesome quotes on them. Most of the quotes are oriented towards women that lift, so if you’re into powerlifting or weightlifting or crossfit or fighting sports or strength training at the gym, I’m sure you’ll find these amusing. If those sports aren’t your thing, no problem, I think their leggings are versatile enough to be worn for other sports as well. Or, you know, no sports at all. Just wear these to the grocery store or take a nap in them. That’s how comfi they are.
Here are some of my other favorites:
