How to (re)define your style

I know a lot of women struggle with finding their own sense of style, so I though I’d share the easiest trick in the book: Pinterest!

As I’m writing this, I’m actually planning on following my own advice. Ever since I joined the workforce over a year ago, I noticed my style has shifted in a way that I’m not superthrilled about. I don’t know if it’s because I have to get up at 5.45 in the morning, or because I have to spend so much time sitting (in the car. behind my desk. in the car again), but I am leaning towards outfits that are quick to put on and comfortable to wear and sit down in.

There is, ofcourse, nothing wrong with wanting to be comfortable, but I do kind of miss the days of crazy heels and sparkly clothing. I personally believe a wardrobe should fit your lifestyle, but I also believe your clothes should bring you joy and excitement and lately, that has been missing. Time for action!

How to discover your style and start planning your outfits

Step 1. Start a board on Pinterest

Like I said, Pinterest is the way to go. If you don’t know Pinterest, it’s basically a site where you can save a bunch of ideas in various categories or “boards”. I have boards for interior design, quotes, modeling stuff…and fashion. I named it “style – want in my size!” because I like to get my inspiration from straightsize fashion as well, even though those pieces are not always available to me in my size (booooo!).

A great way to start pinning is by looking at some of the pieces you own and like and search for them with the word “outfit”. For instance, you have this cute black skirt, but are not sure how to wear it? Look for “A line skirt outfits”. The result will be hundreds of pictures of women wearing a black skirt, in different styles. Then, pin the styles you like and ONLY the styles you like. Getting started is the hardest part, but after a while Pinterest will start feeding you suggestions and it becomes easier. By the way, this is also a great tip if you have bought an item of clothing and are not sure how to combine it.

I had this white ruffle top that I loved but never wore because I never knew how to wear it. Until I found this picture on Pinterest and got inspired! Now I wear it all the time. Sometimes, a little inspiration is all you need.

Step 2. Take a step back

This is important. You’ve pinned away and now have a board with like a 100 pins? Great! Leave it. Go watch a tv show, take a bath, go out for a walk. Don’t look at your board for at least 24 hours. A week is even better. You need the distance for the next step.

Step 3. Look for the connection between the pins

I used to think I had no real style of my own, until I started pinning and all of a sudden, I noticed that I often pinned the same type of things. So I learned that I like skirts and dresses. That I like black, white and jewel tones. That I am not really into prints, unless it’s florals, leopard or stripes. That I prefer gold over silver. That I like combining hard elements like white lace with hard elements like black leather. That I gravitate towards classic looks, instead of being supertrendy. That I like dramatic silhouettes and comfi looks with a twist. SO MUCH INFORMATION.

Step 4. Adjust your closet and shopping behavior accordingly

Do you notice you’re constantly pinning red tops, and yet you don’t own a red top? Go shop for a red top girl! Is your closet filled with jeans, but does your styleboard actually not show a lot of jeans? Get rid of the jeans and buy a dress instead. Out shopping and not sure of something? Time to whip out your pinterest board again and scroll through it. You’ll be inspired again, and it will be so much easier to stick to your style!

How I’m rediscovering my own style

Like I said, ever since I started working and started this whole new phase in my life, I’ve often found myself wearing clothes that don’t give me that feeling of joy and excitement that I used to have. And I miss it! So I took a good long look at my own pinterest board, and gave myself a couple of guidelines to follow in this new chapter of my personal style.

  1. Wear jewellery more often

I pin a LOT of sparkly jewellery, and I actually also buy a lot of jewellery and yet I NEVER wear jewellery. Weird right? I know that on the days that I do put on a fun earring or a bold necklace, I feel great, so I’m really planning on incorporating more jewellery in my daily life.

2.   Invest in comfortable shoes that are fun and make a statement

I used to wear heels all the time, but now that I’m driving I notice I prefer flat shoes (or shoes with a little block heel). I really don’t feel like driving in flat shoes and changing shoes at the office, so I decided that instead I will invest in fun, flat shoes that I can drive in, instead of the same boring black sneakers I basically always wear. Yay, shoeshopping!

3.   Wear skirts more often

I genuinely love skirts, and they are so easy to wear and often come in gorgeous prints. They are also very classic and appropriate for the office, and can easily be combined with a comfi top, so I’ll be wearing those more often!

4.   Plan outfits the night ahead

Like I said, having to get up before 6 in the morning doesn’t exactly help. Instead of taking the time to get dressed, I prefer to sleep 15 minutes longer. Then I have to rush out of bed and get dressed in 30 seconds, so I’ll just grab whatever is easiest. Sleep is important to me, but so is having an outfit that makes me happy. So I want to start planning what I’m going to wear a bit more the night before, making it easier and quicker to get ready in the morning.

Even the thought of doing this makes me excited already! I can ‘t wait to start implementing these changes over the course of the next few weeks and months.
